Welcome to Focus Writing Services (FWS). We offer editorial support to writers of all levels and tailor our services to their needs, which produces pieces that connect with their intended audiences. We do this by creating an efficient and productive working relationship, rooted in open communication and professionalism.
Why you need an editor
You’ve slaved over your manuscript for months (or years), and you finally, finally, add the last period at the end of the last sentence of the manuscript you secretly feared would never, ever end.
You take a deep breath. You smile. You pull out your flip phone to text your remaining friends that you can leave your cave for the first time in ages. After running your hands through what’s left of your dishevelled hair, you pour yourself a drink, maybe coffee, or wine, or a shot of something stronger. Your smile transforms into a grin as you revel in a growing sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. By golly, you did it!
Then . . . you lean back in your chair. You look around your dungeon. Muscle memory takes over, and your fingers play idly at the keyboard until you remember that the story is finished.
What the heck do you do now?
Of course, it does. I know because I’ve been there.
When I started writing, I learned the ropes by slogging through the trenches too—writing, editing, (crying), critiquing, (crying), self-publishing, marketing, (crying), quitting (yes! I admit it!), and then starting all over. I know how confusing and frustrating and downright aggravating the experience can be, which is why I empathize with writers who are caught in the thick of it.
Why FWS may be what you need
Whether you are struggling to “fix” your manuscript, want to tailor your marketing content to your target audience, or need of a thorough edit of your written content, I will put my experience and expertise to work for you.
You can follow my writing adventures here and here, but I’ll present a quick summary. I am the publisher of the Lost Pen Magazine and have self-published three adult fantasy novels. My short stories, flash fiction, poems, articles, interviews, guest posts, and devotionals have appeared in various magazines, blogs, and anthologies. I’ve beta-read numerous books and have mentored and coached writers. And, last but not least, I studied copy-editing at Simon Fraser University.
Focus Writing Services was born out of my personal challenges, successes, and hard-earned lessons, and I would like to put all of that to work for you.
- web content

- short stories
- and more
Don’t see your project there? Ask us about it. We are adaptable and enjoy a challenge.
FWS can help if:
- You need developmental editing, copy-editing, or proofreading of your fiction, non-fiction, or marketing content.
- You care deeply about the quality of your work and are looking for an editor who’s driven to transform manuscripts into works their writers are proud of.
- You need coaching, accountability, or other writing-related help not mentioned here. Let’s talk about it and see how FWS can help.
What you’ll need:
- Writing samples (a few pages) from at least two different sections of your manuscript (preferably the beginning and middle). This helps us estimate how long it will take to complete the edit and enables us to suggest the appropriate type of edit (developmental edit vs. copy-edit vs. proofread).
- Your outline, if you have one.
- Your synopsis, if you have one.
Based on these, we can then quote you a price. Please note that a rough draft will likely involve more work and take longer to complete than a manuscript that has already gone through numerous rounds of revisions.
What to expect:
Honesty. Your document will likely be covered in red marks, and a trail of comments will jam up the margin. But don’t panic. It’s our job to find the errors and inconsistencies that others have missed. We take that job seriously, so please look at it as us looking out for you.
Suggestions. We will suggest corrections to inspire your own solutions to the issues raised.
Communication. We will be available to discuss the edits or to help you figure out the best way to go about your revisions.
What’s expected of you:
An open mind. We know how stressful and ego-crushing this process can be. But it’s necessary to weed out the issues plaguing your work and to figure out how to fix them.
Communication. We hope you will let us know if you have questions so we can discuss them.
To remember that we are doing the job we were hired for, and our ultimate goal is to help you produce the best work possible. The comments, corrections, and suggestions are there to help, but your story belongs to you. Ultimately, you decide how you will apply them.
